Why Sign Language Interpreters Need a Wellness Retreat

I created the yoga and wellness retreat for sign language interpreters because there was nothing else like it.

There were trainings, conferences, workshops, and vacations—but no place designed around the physical, mental, and emotional demands of interpreting, where you could step out of the professional role, care for your body, and reconnect with who you are beyond the work.

So I created one. And I created it in Mexico because this is where my own nervous system finally began to come down. Here, the pace is different.

Mornings begin with birds and ocean air. Meals are fresh and unhurried. Mango, watermelon, jicama with lime, warm tortillas, and enchiladas covered in green sauce.

There is time to walk, swim, rest, talk, and notice your breath. You leave behind the constant reminders of home—the messages, errands, assignments, responsibilities—and enter another rhythm.

That matters. It gives you room to breathe, to see your life from another perspective, and to remember parts of yourself that can disappear beneath the demands of work.

Why Sign Language Interpreters Need Space to Restore

Interpreting asks a tremendous amount of the body and mind. You are listening, watching, processing, deciding, responding, and staying professionally present, often while absorbing the emotional intensity of the room.

Then the assignment ends, and you are expected to move on. But your body may still be tense. Your mind may still be replaying the interaction. Your nervous system may still be activated.

Interpreters need more than another training telling them how to do their jobs better. They need a place where they are not responsible for anyone else’s experience. A place where they can take off the work mask. A place where the joys, struggles, physical pain, emotional impact, and complexity of the profession are already understood. Nothing has to be explained. Nothing has to be defended.

There is release, connection, laughter, honesty, and no judgment.

The teaching is verbal, visual, detailed, and progressive, with long, luxurious sessions of guided deep relaxation.

You use your body in a new way. You understand yourself in a new way. And from there, you can begin making changes that last beyond the week.

What an Interpreter Wellness Retreat Makes Possible

The retreat began with yoga. I wanted interpreters to relieve pain, build strength, move more freely, and learn how to care for the body they depend on for work. But it became much more.

One woman had never traveled alone and had never practiced yoga. She nearly missed the final boat to the retreat center and arrived frightened and overwhelmed. Five days later, her eyes were sparkling.

Another participant was facing a serious health challenge. The retreat could not change what was waiting for her, but it gave her more capacity to face it and go through it with resources.

One woman arrived after working in a negative environment that had left her discouraged and isolated. She left with support, friendship, and the knowledge that she was not alone.

Another began questioning the direction of her career and imagining a different future.

The yoga matters. It clears away the noise so you can hear your true inner voice.

More Than a Yoga Retreat in Mexico

This retreat is not simply a vacation in a beautiful place. It is not simply a yoga retreat with interpreters in the room. It is a space built around the real physical, mental, and emotional demands of interpreting.

A place to restore your energy.

A place to feel your body again.

A place to be supported instead of responsible.

A place to remember that you are more than the work you do.

Mexico gave me that perspective. This retreat is my way of sharing it with you

It's the best professional development event you will ever experience.
