Have you ever found it completely frustrating when someone tells you to “just relax?" It’s easy to say, but much harder to actually do. Stress can load up on our nervous system, seeping deep into our bodies and causing all kinds of issues.
It’s a bit like cleaning up your house. I recently moved out of my house an discovered all sorts of hidden dust bunnies that had collected over the years.
Kinda gross! We need to regularly clean up our nervous system to clean up all the dust bunnies, prevent stress from settling in and creating problems. Just saying "relax" is not enough; it’s the experience that truly matters.
In Sanskrit, this concept is known as svadhyaya—self-study, or the practice of deeply understanding yourself. I don't want to listen to someone with that annoying voice that tries to lull me into relaxation. I want to learn how to actually relax.
To illustrate, I once had a student who struggled to relax her hands, but they wouldn't stop moving. It seemed like she had no control, so we used gentle weight to help her feel and release the tension. Another student experienced spasms when in a typically relaxing pose. . We had to work together to find a way for her body to learn how to truly let go. Everyone is different but both of their bodies had to learn to release and let go.
In the video linked below, I’ll show you how to release the weight of stress in the center line of your body and how to diffuse that pent-up energy so you can finally relax. If you’ve ever been told to relax but felt far from it, your system likely needs to diffuse that stress before it can unwind. Ready to give it a try?
