Finding Relief from Hand and Wrist Pain—Here’s How

As sign language interpreters, our hands and wrists are crucial tools for our work. However, the overuse and repetitive strain often lead to inflammation and discomfort. It can feel like an inevitable part of the job, but here’s some good news: it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right awareness and approach, relief is possible.

Why Rest Isn't Always the Answer

When pain or inflammation flares up, our first instinct is often to stop moving, hoping that rest will provide the relief we need. But here’s something many people don’t realize: when done carefully, progressive movement can actually help the healing process. For interpreters, this is especially important because our work depends on movement.

Properly placing load on the wrists and shoulders is essential for building strength, but this should come only after addressing the other parts of your body. Strengthening areas like the legs, hips, and core ensures that your entire body supports itself, reducing strain on the more vulnerable parts like your wrists and hands.

A Real-Life Example of Healing Through Movement

Let me share a quick story about one of my clients, Louise (not her real name). When she came to me, she had been dealing with recurring hand and wrist inflammation that affected not only her work but also her quality of life. Like many interpreters, she assumed that focusing only on the painful areas would solve the problem.

Instead, we took a broader approach. We looked beyond her hands and wrists, examining her diet, hydration, work shifts, and daily habits. After starting a progressive yoga practice that worked her entire body, Louise found that her flare-ups diminished. Her wrists and hands began to heal, but more importantly, her whole body came into balance. After three months, she was free from painful flare-ups, and she’s thriving in her work once again.

The Body Works as a Whole

It’s easy to focus solely on the area of pain, but your body works like an orchestra. When one part—such as your wrists or hands—is out of tune, the whole system suffers. The secret to healing lies in bringing everything back into balance. This holistic approach leads to more effective and lasting relief.

Simple Steps to Help Your Flare-Ups

If you’re experiencing painful inflammation, here are a few tips to get you started on your path to relief:

  • Keep a Journal: Track your activities, diet, and work conditions. Are there any patterns that trigger flare-ups?

  • Hydrate: Sip warm water throughout the day to keep your tissues hydrated and flexible.

  • Try Gentle Wrist Exercises: Check out https://youtu.be/BUHDeCEHxS for movements that can help soothe wrist inflammation.

  • Rest and Restore to prevent serious issues from arising, start a ritual of putting weight your hands with blankets, small weights, or even pillows. This will restore the nervous system and activate your body's natural healing power.
